The Midnight Cat of Rustling Leaves

My hands are starting to age.

You can always tell a person's true age by their hands. There's an old World War II movie from the '50s, To Hell and Back, where the war-hero-turned-actor Audie Murphy plays himself, recreating the same real-life feats he himself had performed more-than-a-decade previous when he was more-than-a-decade younger; it was released when he was 30, and he's playing a teenager, but Audie Murphy, he's handsomely baby-faced, and actually really convincing as a minor-who-had-to-lie-about-being-18-to-get-into-the-army. He's actually really convincing, except for one scene. It's near the beginning, before his mother dies, and he goes to hug her, the actress playing her, and he wraps his arms around her back and the back of her head, and you can see his hands. And they're broad and veiny and starting to go boney. A man's hands. A mortal's hands.

My hands.

And I wonder, as I survey the reddening sprawl of suburbia before me from the top of this hill, orange trees and brown rooftops under a salmon-colored sky, I wonder if Audie Murphy felt the same way looking at his hands then the way I do looking at mine now? Even when his best films were still ahead of him and everyone knew it, would he have occasion to feel old? I set the skateboard down on the ground and mount it gingerly.

I think about Tony Hawk a lot as well. I hadn't done it in probably over a decade, but I've been skateboarding recently, going down the concrete-plated cul-de-sac hills and wiping out and skinning myself all over, and, realizing, I don't have it anymore, not like when I was a kid; though I can keep lying to myself alright, or keep on trying to push back against it, push against it like I push against the ground now, sneakered back foot scooping against the concrete sidewalk sneakered front foot feeling the grit of the sandpapered deck as it vibrates with the irregularities of the sidewalk rolling under me as I begin my descent. And Tony Hawk is getting older too and he wipes out plenty of times and he doesn't let it get to him, but I'm letting it get to me, and that's, fine. Tony Hawk is better still now than I ever was, and it makes me feel old to think he's getting old, and having looked up to him since I was a kid and being the age I am now the feeling would probably be mutual were we ever to meet. And we would just do a loop-de-loop of feeling old against each other, I guess.

And there's a third person I think about a lot as well, Nick Northrop from when I was in second grade, whom I'd seen at the grocery store just the other day, I'd say two months ago buying baby stuff where I was buying condensed bean-with-bacon soup. And he looked so, well, not old, but those adult features for him looked old, impossibly so. Maybe to an outside observer he'd just appear a normal man, but all I could notice as I looked at him that day two months ago was his eyes starting to sink back in their sockets and his hair starting to fade. And we're the same age, and am I starting to look like that? And I pray that it's just because he always seemed so much older and wiser than he really was, that's probably it. Thin Nicky Northrop, who would tell us all the secrets of the grown-ups, about guns and politicians and sex stuff and the end of the world, and all the scary stuff like the axe-faced waterbabies who'd been drowned at the lake and came back to pull you under if you got too close, and Mother Whispers who appeared to you in mirrors if you called her in the darkness, and the Midnight Cat of the Rustling Leaves who would speak to you and tell you secrets and steal your skin.

There's a gust of wind and a swirl of dead leaves out of the corner of my eye, which whip against my legs like a cat trying to rub against you, and the sidewalk falls out from under me and everything's a blur, but a crystalized one like an out-of-focus snapshot. I'm momentarily weightlessly airborne, and I'm coming down again, and I'm on the ground and I'm rolling bodily downhill for a thump-thump-thump on my side as I catch myself and twist to minimize damage. Tony Hawk doesn't let it get to him but I let it get to me, because I wipe out, eat dirt, biff it, and when I pick myself up, as I push myself up from the ground like I do now, I catch a glimpse of my hands and they're broad and veiny and starting-to-go boney. And the skin is getting loose and it doesn't heal as well as it did and the scars don't fade like they used to, but that part's fine, more distinguished or something, makes my fingers easier to bend. The practice seems to have worked, not a scrape on me, a little more dirt and gravel on my jacket but bodily none the worse for wear.

I look up from myself, and around, and there's a cat across the street who seems to have seen my mishap, though its eyes are inscrutable. Um so yeah who am I kidding, it's easy for you to make that connection, this baby is gonna be the MIDNIGHT CAT OF THE RUSTLING LEAVES, let's get to that skin-stealing babey! I mean, it wouldn't really be fooling anybody if I made it seem like, oh, actually no, this is a different cat. Because I mean, let's take a look at her:

She's a black cat, her fur is all midnight-y. Seems to suck in light, be a little be too dark for the time of day, still light outside. As she advances toward me, maybe in her silver eyes is the moonlight on a clear night. And though it doesn't seem strange at the time, because hey-that's-what-wind-does, the leaves from earlier are nowhere to be seen. Maybe I would have made the connection a lot earlier had that not been...

But, no, I'm not sure at all how accurate any of Nick Northrop's stories were anyway. Did the leaves have anything to do with the cat? Was that part just a coincidence, and a minor one to boot? Dead and dry and rustling, that's what all the leaves look like right now. So, whatever. Nick Northrop, he was probably wrong about some things, he was wildly off about how sex works after all (and, hey, you don't want to know, you just don't.)

You just do not. You may think you do, but you-...

And, anyway, well, he was right about the leaves, yes, and more right about the skin thing than I could probably have hoped.

I'm on my haunches now, hands outstretched nonthreateningly, beckoning the cat over. She hesitates, but draws closer, closer, she's nearby now. She brings her face up to my hand. Tentative movements- slow to advance, quick to retreat, but steadily, with minute jerks, advancing, till I can feel the autumnal warmth of her breath on my palm. I look up and away, making no eye contact lest it be perceived as a challenge. I hear sniffs and sniffs, and finally she tentatively licks my hand. But my oh my, that's good skin, says a soft voice warmly, from the cat's direction. I think I'm going to take it.

I startle downwards. "Um." The cat looks back up at me. Your skin, I'm going to take it, I think. The creature talks, physically opens its mouth and speaks, voice crackling around the edges like old leather. I feel my own mouth twitch at the corners. I'm not as surprised as maybe I should be, perhaps a sign that I'm not as old as I fear, and not so set in my ways, or perhaps the opposite of that somehow, that as I age I grow weary and accept things as they are.

My twitching mouth pulls into a line. "That's not how this works," I find myself saying. "You don't take my skin until you tell me a secret," and as I say the words the idea starts to feel more familiar. Is it right, though? Was there anything in the stories about a deal?

Very well, then. Would you like to know a secret? The cat spoke in a soft kind voice, just like a perfect gentleman. There is no bargain here, I would like to take your skin either way, but it does seem a fair trade.

"I..." I find myself wishing to go back to something like earlier, flying through the air, a moment frozen in time. There's no rush here, is there? There's no way out of this, right? The way the cat speaks, like my skin would be a courtesy rather than a necessity, gives me hope. "At least let me wash off first," I shove syllable-by-syllable through numb lips, gesturing down at myself, still covered in the dust of the wipeout.

The cat eyes me with those full-moon eyes, narrows them up at me. As the sky dims, they begin to glow the suggestion of stars. Strange request, but very well. There's another gust of wind, and the creature is gone in a scatter of fallen leaves.

I'm back on the ground again, where I had been, as though none of it had happened, not that I had moved from my spot at all in the first place. I feel at my pulse, slightly saggy skin on my wrist tugging a little more loosely than I'm comfortable with. Heartrate checked, I lift my gaze to the sunset. The encounter... It already feels like it hadn't been real. It hadn't felt real in the first place.

My fingers slide up to my palm to feel the patch of skin where the cat had, possibly, licked me. Dry, of course, but that wasn't what I had been feeling for. I suppose I should go home now. Go home and get washed up, even. If I don't wash again, ever, will the cat decide never to come back? No, she'd probably take it regardless. Maybe she'd get bored and take someone else's skin instead? Or maybe she'd do that regardless. Why did cats have to be so fickle. Why does my skin have to be so smooth. Why couldn't it be a midnight dog of rustling leaves, then at least I'd better know what to expect.

So I'm back at home now, in the bathroom, washing my hands. I live alone, no-one forcing me to clean myself up like this, but by this point I've managed to convince myself that I'd hit my head in the tumble. Nick Northrup, Nick Northrup is the one who'd sent me into this minor crisis. Stupid Nick Northrup and his stupid old-looking face. I went skateboarding, and I hit my head, and his stupid horror stories inspired me to dream, or hallucinate, or something, one of the stories he'd told.

I do not look into the mirror above the sink, even out of the corner of my eye, though; do not choke out Mother Whispers' name. Made sure that the window was closed before I washed up, that no cat could get in. What was the third one, waterbabies, well that was a lakeside thing, I'm sure a bath would be fine. I force myself to look into the mirror. This was safe. This was safe.

And so I strip down and take a bath and feel better, allow myself to crack open the window to let out the moisture, and as I get dressed again fallen autumn leaves tap on the window behind me, blowing in a windless night, fluttering in through the crack and landing on the sill in a tiny pile which I turn around in time to witness constituting themselves into a cat of midnight black.

I fall to the ground with my pants only halfway on. Another moment in time, panic setting in a lot more rapidly now. Undoing so much goodwill of that bath, waste of lavender.

Thank you for washing up, she says in a suave, cheerful tone. May I have that skin of yours now please?

"No..." I rasp. There's no way out of this, is there, think, think...

Please, I would like your skin. She grows more agitated now. If you do not surrender your skin I may have to steal it.

My mind is reeling, entire sentences passing in between heartbeats. I'm-kidding-nobody lubdub what-do-I-have-to-live-for lubdub I'm-a-total-failure-anyway lubdub nobody-will-ever-love-me lubdub by-this-point-all-I-have-to-look-forward-to-is-dying lubdub might-as-well-do-that-in-an-interesting-way lubdub.

And I give in.

"Sounds good," I say, my voice surprisingly even. "Go ahead and come get it."

She stops writhing, seeming just as amazed as I feel. Thank you. And she hops down from the windowsill, pads towards me- and pokes into the bathroom wastebasket.

Uh. What?

I can feel the blood in my veins beat through my skull as she rifles around through the tissues and cardboard tubes. She stills as she finds what she's looking for, and she plucks her head in and out, like a heron snatching a fish. Pulling her head up past the rim of the basket, and between her teeth is...

An old scab of mine, which I had peeled off a few weeks back after skinning my knee two months ago in the first recent skateboarding accident. Thisth'll do justh nithely, thang you, nods the cat, hopping back up onto the windowsill and pushing the window more fully open with its forehead.

"Um," I say. "You're welcome."

She looks back at me as though she thinks me expecting something. Ah, bugt of coursth, the cat grumbles, hopping back down and sauntering over to me. I stretch out my hand, which now seems so smooth, so small, and slide my fingers down the fur on the back of the cat's head in a long stroke as she pulls her head up to mine. She lisps a secret into my ear, hops back up on the windowsill, and disappears out the window, in a burst of browning leaves.

Spooky Story 2021

Okay so every year I post a story and every year I have to go back into the archives to see how I format it with the announcement post the day before- and sometimes I goof on that but I think I'm doing it right this year, post beforehand titled thusly saying "Spooky Story [year]" with a brief introduction, and the next day the post is titled the name of the story and the text thereof, the story. Last year I had no such introduction, but I did write up a bit of a post on November 1st with the intention of backdating it to October 30th... maybe I should actually post that up, it would provide some context for last year's (and this post of this year...)

So I had a couplefew of ideas for what the story would be this year, saving one of them for next year (it would be more appropriate for 2022 than 2021,) and one of them I guess I'll explain in the backdated post I just told you about, this being the part where the context I just talked about would be explained. Hahaha, this is so boring, you don't care.

So I guess the story tomorrow is going to be called something like, The Cat of the Whispering Leaves. hasn'tbeenfinalizedyetthough

...I haven't posted in ages- I was going to say, on this blog, but really, on anything. Webcomic? Not cancelled, but, it's been, I mean I haven't drawn anything or written anything and even the projects I'm already halfway through I haven't really done much more than poked with a stick before running away. YouTube. Am I doing nanowrimo this year? My job eats so much of my time, but like I actually enjoy it and find it fulfilling, and am good at it even! It was just supposed to be this short temporary thing, for a few weeks or a few months, work on the farm in the meantime before doing crewmember stuff on a filmset once production of that began- but that whole thing was hit by a current events train well before the pandemic struck.

The Midnight Cat of the Whispering Leaves, that's a little better. At first the villain was just going to be a skeleton or something, but I had a dream this morning where there was, something about, the end of the Doctor Who episode Day of the Moon where Amy's both pregnant and not pregnant, later revealed to be because, her body at the TARDIS is just her actually-pregnant consciousness projected into a not-pregnant Ganger flesh or whatever-- only instead it's of pregnant/not pregnant it's, pile of leaves/a cat. So like, yeah!

I have not seen a single episode of Doctor Who starring the twelfth or thirteenth doctors. Think the most recent episode I've caught the entirety of is, *sucks teeth,* Nightmare in Silver? I mean I have vague recollections of The Name of the Doctor but was just, so confused, throughout, the entire thing...

Different (Better?) Prelude Page

Wasn't satisfied with the wording earlier and hopefully this is better?? I'm still alive, but fun fact, printer and scanner companies are evil and probably have some nefarious purposes behind why their technology is so difficult to use. You have to install a driver! A different one each per new printer/scanner! It's totally possible to just make it plug and play, but they choose the difficult option!

Cap'n Patches! April 29 2021

Some of this came out well!

Not sure it's at the point where I'd be impressed enough to consider my own thing worth reading yet, heh, but it feels good to be creating, and finishing something as opposed to not finishing it. Still trying to figure out workflow (ideally I figured I'd draw the artwork out physically, scan, and color from there, but this is just coloring with the drawing also in the computer, isn't that interesting;) maybe I'll have something by next week, maybe not. But gee I hopse-oh.

Cap'n Patches April 22 2021: Prelude time!

This is my third attempt at this gif, the content being the same but the word that fades in having been switched up. At first it was Preface, again, which we'd already seen like three times, and so figure, we're out of that by now with this, this should be different!

So then I changed it to Prologue, and was going with that for a while... I was debating whether the Act I prologue and the Act 0 prelude should be the same thing... but hey good news, I got a few Eldritch Horror expansions today in the mail, and I'd decided to order them really mostly because I love the Prelude cards introduced in the expansions, and hey I respect Michael Reviewcorner's opinions but he's wrong on this one,  prelude cards rock, and did somebody say Prelude hey that's enough of a sign for me!

Besides there's already a prologue coming up, different from the Preface and the Prelude, (guess I'm gonna have to figure out what's in it now but that's fine, I've got a few ideas) but it's different anyway, and you know what I think I'll do that thing I was talking about and release more than one page today.

Patches: Next Gif

I title this post thus, just "nex gif," because I'm not at this point sure if I really am going for the each-page-is-the-next-week's approach, but three-fourths of the gifs into it I guess I probably am. Which is actually fine! Not as impressive in the archive, when we come to hosting this on its own site, but heck it's just the archive..

Pretty pleased with how this came out! It's something I've been thinking about, that these aren't as good as they could possibly be, but about as good as I can make them with my current skillset; maybe I'll get better ever or maybe not... but these look real swanky actually, reviewing them with freshened eyes.

Cap'n Patches: April 1st and 8th

Instead of one gargantuan gif I'm chunking it out into four smaller ones! Transitioning from one tableau to another, which gives you time to actually stop and study them, which is also much better (the single-gif file would have had to be even more enormous had I timed it out with the lingering tableaux like I'd wanted.) I've got all four gifs already constructed, and kinda want to post them all now and get on with the story, but doing it one at a time gives me more time to work on what comes next (which is not in gif format.) I'll be forced into deeper water soon enough; this gives me comfortable lead time and makes me feel like I'm on top of the ball. Meanwhile I guess I should also be looking for a way to host these on their own dedicated site...

I think there'll be gifs again, perhaps every time April 1st happens to fall on a Thursday. As ambitious as this one? More ambitious? Maybe even a fully animated video file instead...? we'll see i guess.

the gif for real tho??

exported this time at LOWEST MAXIMUM QUALITY POSSIBLE like seriously IT SHOULDN'T BE MATHEMATICALLY POSSIBLE but we DID IT ANYWAY. Let's see if it's even gonna work cos it still took a heckuh long time to upload hmm.

I hope it doesn't actually, because I've got a better idea...

Cap'n Patches Preface Page

It's definitely the same page as last time! Nothing added at all, so if you saw the page last week it's not going to be any different! You may as well click away right now! Are you still reading this? Are you? Are you? Well are you? well you might as well SWEEP JEEPERS WHAT IS THAT

Alright so this experiment's a failure I guess; turns out a 24-second long animated gif file at 618x852 pixels takes... infinity, to load. Joke's on me I guess

(OR MAYBE IT'S JUST A STILL IMAGE I GUESS YOU'LL NEVER KNOW maybe *that's* the April Fool's joke Mwhahaha)

Cap'n Patches Preface Page

This was planned to be a little more elaborate, but we can save that for next week. I had two ideas for this page, I guess we're doing both? Covid vaccine kinda wiping me out right now, too sleepy to finish off the more elaborate tableau this week. We're... just gonna have two preface pages eh.

Looked through quite a few 17th century texts to get historical typography right. AND MAIMING ET CETERA.

Cap'n Patches Title Page

Updates on Thursdays! I'll be hosting it on its own site once I figure out how! I mean like I've got the site designed and laid out and everything but I don't know what the best option is web host-wise! Plus I thought you could publish HTML straight to the internet from InDesign but if that is a real thing I must be doing it wrong! It feels amazing having this out in the world even in this rudimentary form though! I think it turned out well! There's still so much that I need to figure out workflow-wise and everything but I've got a couple of weeks before we get out of the typography-based stuff! Okay I love you and I think you're doing a pretty good job handling the challenges life is throwing at you! See you next time! Bye!

Randomly Guessing Guestings before the Next WandaVision Eppy Comes Out!

Okey dokey, so this post contains spoilers for The Mandalorian, which I have not seen! But of which I know that

Luke Skywalker shows up at the end of season two there to pick Grogu up.

Whatever that means!

And so I'm really enjoying WandaVision, and there's supposed to be such a moment coming up, a cameo by, somebody CG Mark Hamill-esque, maybe in episode 5! So I'm getting my guesses in now.

1. My first thought when I heard there would be a surprise star cameo was that it would be... Tom Cruise or something! Playing Agnes's husband Ralph whom we haven't seen yet. Why Tom Cruise specifically? Because this mysterious Ralph is actually the demon Mephisto, and Tom Cruise would do wonderfully to play Satan??

2. It's supposed to be specifically more of a Luke Skywalker-style cameo, which means somebody we know but who's unexpected here. We haven't seen The Leader since the 2008 Incredible Hulk movie! It's gotta be Tim Blake Nelson, hasn't it?

3. Seeing how Skywalker was a CG Mark Hamill, Disney(+) are going to reuse the exact same assets and feature... Bucky Barnes, as portrayed by CG Sebastian Stan! Because Mark Hamill and Sebastian Stan look exactly alike! And they can just... or they can just (4) use the real Sebastian Stan!

5? It's gonna be CG Stan Lee, isn't it? Or maybe he filmed a cameo or two for the upcoming television shows before his death? (???)

So that is my thought.

POST-EPISODE FIVE EDIT: Okay, so I kinda saw that coming..., but I didn't see... *that,* coming.

Readshorts: A Blogpost with Three Prologues

 1. Dreamed the night before last that Cailin and I were in the pool table room of Grandpa's house, looking down out at the field, down where there may have been a few workers doing something or other. In the dream there's no fence or ditch that separates the field from the road, and there's a cement truck that pulls in hard off of the road, swinging and broadsiding on of the figures down on the field, who collapses. Horrified, Cailin and I drop whatever it was that we were doing and rush out to see if they're still alive. It's a little later, and we're back in the house, and the man who'd been hit turns out to have been my coworker Oscar. If he's dead then I don't know how I'm going to continue working- but thankfully he's still alive.

2. Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas by John Scalzi is about a group of future scientists who have strange, impossible-to-explain things happen aboard their starship, where it eventually turns out that the things are happening because they're characters in a Star Trek-like television show that plays fast and loose with its science. It's a pretty funny book, though truth be told there was only one occasion that caused me to laugh out loud. It's still worth reading because of those three codas mentioned in the title. It's worth reading for those three codas alone. They're, among the most raw human honest things I've read in my life, and each is better than the last. And, like, the rest of the book is pretty okay too, worth reading on its own and not that thick so it shouldn't take longer than a few days if you want. Anyway.

3. At lunch yesterday Dad handed me a couple of bags of cookies that he'd made, for me to give to my coworkers. I've got two of those, more or less. Usually it's Oscar who helps me feed calves, but a couple of days a week it's Joaquim. Before feeding the calves their dinner yesterday I found the opportunity to tell Oscar my dream, and hand him one of the two bags of cookies. I think Joaquim was off yesterday so I kept the other bag in my pocket till I could see him.

Work's at 7:00, and I'm usually pretty punctual and sometimes clock in at 6:59, which happened this morning: walking in, a loader had driven up behind me, lowered its bucket for me to get in, to drive me to the barn. It was Brent, and as I clocked in he told me that with both Joaquim and Oscar in today, if everyone scheduled to be in the barn today came in, I can take the day off. (If not, it would be Oscar and me feeding, Joaquim in the parlor helping to milk.) We'd see by around 7:30, but until then, I started getting prepped to fill the calf bottles, because it takes me just about that long. Prepare everything by the calf room (including heating things up, rinsing things off, pouring in hot water to keep the bottles warm and adding formula which will be mixed into their milk when that gets poured in,) swing the tractor around to in front of the milk room, fill up the bottles with milk, put the nipples on them. We can usually leave around 7:50.

So I finish up there, head back to find Oscar. I'd seen Joaquim, in the parlor, so I'm not sure by this point if he is going to help with breakfast, but when he sees I'm ready he heads into the break room to get better dressed for outside. Brent had disappeared somewhere, not sure where - so, was I supposed to gauge for myself if he'd let me leave early? But he's with Oscar, in the break room, Oscar finishing up telling him the story of me telling him my dream and then giving him cookies. Brent says I can leave if I want, and goes off elsewhere, and Oscar asks me what I want to do and I say I'm here actually to give Joaquim some cookies as well. And it's perfect, and it feels so scripted, and I decide to stay to feed for breakfast, because it goes a lot quicker with three people than with only two.

And then right before feeding the hutches, Joaquim saved my bacon-- so I caught myself in time I didn't dump all the bottles to the ground when I dumped out the hot water from the bottle tray-panel-tub-thing (it's usually closed, bottles held in and locked by the top grate, but the tray had been opened from feeding the group pens before the individual hutches got fed) but he called my name and I caught myself, and everything turned out non-disastrously (maybe the bottles would have gone everywhere, or maybe I would have caught myself in time had he not been there, or maybe I wouldn't have tilted the tray at such a steep angle if Joaquim hadn't been with us in the first place so it'd be fine anyway, who's to say.) And feeding the calves in the hutches I could make sure that the right calves received the right bottles, because the youngest ones get a special mix and I counted it out just right based on how many were born the most recently.

So in Redshirts, they try not to get caught up in The Narrative, because it's where bad things happen and where nothing makes sense... but in my experience of it, this morning felt so perfect, like a Narrative, only my writer is a lot better apparently, and it was humbling and lovely. Kinda working out how to deal with these emotion things, and that feeling, like being caught up in something like a well-crafted story, certainly is one of those.

Twinning

Feels like something I would write, in a lot of ways (thematic, structural etc) and I quite enjoyed it!, so you can consider this a second Spooky Short Story if you want IDK, half a month later. Maybe I should've waited till next year to link it so I wouldn't have to write one myself but it looks like they (VICE) put up one every year themselves, and this is this year's, and who knows if next year's is going to be as, me, as this year's is.

the rope slackening in your hand

maybe it comes as a memory. dusk, at the fair with your father, and the late autumn air still warm. a cold front blowing in as the evening sets, a chill finger of wind that tugs at the edges of your sleeves. you two, you're walking together, faster and faster and the crowd seems endless and the fairground seems to stretch on and on and maybe you can't remember arriving in the first place, to be so far lost. you're reaching out to your father and maybe he's reaching back for you and you two are holding tightly as possible (and maybe his hands seem so big and maybe his hands seem so sweaty) and you're in a hurry though you don't know why (maybe he's afraid) and he's so much faster than you, running and running. and you slip and he keeps running and you do too so it's like you're still together, and maybe it's like neither of you are moving at all, if you can stay close to him just the same and if you don't know how far in or out you still are. maybe it's the people around you who are all the ones moving past in an endless procession. but your father keeps running, and you can feel the precise distance between the two of you, and you can feel it grow like a slipping rope slackening in your hand. and maybe you don't cry as you two drift further apart and maybe he doesn't see you get swept up in a line of people lined up so neatly and so eagerly, lined up to go inside the haunted house which you had been so afraid of last time but did not have to enter.

and you can still feel the distance between you grow and grow as he never looks back over his shoulder,  like maybe he trusts you or maybe he doesn't care or maybe he's in too much of a hurry and his mind is on other things, and as it's the queue that's moving and as it's you who's standing still as you run, you're caught up into the building as your father slips away from you. and your voice catches in your throat and you try to turn around and leave out the entrance but the line which stretches endlessly outward pushes endlessly in, the doors of the house open like a maw to accept them. (though maybe there's only a few dozen people, and maybe it's just that you can't see past their legs, though maybe you're taller than that by now, in whatever reality the memory corresponds to.)

and you, still feeling your father slipping away, attuned to his location in the mysterious way that a compass knows where north is, have no choice but to push through the house, race through the house and race out the other side, the neat little line that pours out the back door you know is there. and keep running and following your north and catching up to him. and maybe if you're brave enough and fast enough he'll turn around and never even notice that you had slipped away.

maybe you take a look back out at the sky again, though, blue with orange setting in, before licking your lips and putting your head down and stepping through the doors.

and there's straw everywhere and dust, and fake cobwebs and maybe you remember shrill laughter from another room. and there's arrows on the wooden floor in chalk, and you're hurrying and following the arrows and not looking up and your compass is spinning and you look up too late to realize that it was a maze and that you'd been tricked. and maybe there are employees dressed as monsters and hiding in the walls, and maybe there are other guests around you but in your memory you feel alone and you feel small and you feel like you'll never be more lost in your life.

and your father is there suddenly like a vision before you, though you can still feel him running further and further away, in your compass in your rope, and maybe he pulls you up in his arms and carries you to the car and you two drive home together but maybe the memory ends before that, with the thought, or maybe the knowledge, that whatever had come to rescue you, it was not your father.

but you've known fear and held its hand and talked with it the way that some are said to be able to talk with the dead, and see it all around yourself and everyone in the way that some are said to be able to see the dead. you see it in adults in their loves and lusts and their politics, and you see it in children in their breath and in their heartbeat and in their trembling hands.

and maybe you see it in yoursel

Video Games Are Cool

Drifting off to sleep and I remember this out of nowhere. Maybe just the sheer nightmare of reality breaking down around you. (Not what my spooky story is about this year but not a bad idea.) Video games are cool, but they have edges, but this is something that incorporates the edges into other edges. Not anything that could be accomplished in any other medium. Videogames are cool.

I could not sleep until I'd tracked it down and shared it. Now I can sleep.

Still Counts

This is from the day after the thing from last post, though it's been a couple of weeks. The thing from last post it took me a while to swing around to and post about as well, but I figured everything in order and posted that before this, I guess reckoning I'd be around to posting today's post the day after, or even later on the day of. Didn't happen obviously. Executive dysfunction SUX.

Alright so after the calves are around 8 weeks old we move them from their individual hutches into group pens, 8 at a time (four fit in the wagon so we make two trips.) Those calves in the pens get fed once a day, until we wean them by simply stopping doing that. Pens two and five weren't getting fed on this particular day. And I realized. Two and five.

Alright I've mentioned before https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTlg0cK-UjE wrong link Deep 6 Eyes here!, I prolly (??) have synesthesia associating colors with numbers- 2  and 6 with blue and orange. Two and five, here I realize, fit together: five is yellow somehow, with two being blue.

When I eat M&Ms I eat them in colored pairs, it's this whole thing, and blue and yellow go together. The two pens here not getting fed, the mathematics of it, reminds me of that, and the rest of it snaps into place.

I mentioned being unsure of any of the other numbered colored connotations, but with blue and yellow in place the remainder snaps in place easily. Or, most of them do. 2 is blue, 3 is green, 4 is ??brown?red?? 5 is yellow 6 is orange 7 is purple 8 might be black and 0 feels white. 1 and 9 are also numbers. They feel like colors imperceivable by humans.

Like I pointed out earlier it's not a literal viewing of those numbers as intrinsically colored, it's more of a vague association. But it still counts.

My Favorite Author Wrote Something Just for Me!

(I mean it was in response to a comment I made on a YouTube video he did, about how soothing the fan in the background is, but that's still pretty cool. eh?)

Not always, but it was a very hot day :)

(Dan Wells is a professional GM now and does videos reviewing different roleplaying systems and splatbooks, and his channel is still small enough for him to be able to reply to each comment he gets.)

Legit tho FATE is such a good roleplaying system.

Which Reminds Me of This Other Hypnotizingly Good Video Essay

So I watched a few more Errant Signal videos, but like not as many as I'd want to, because video game videos but spoilers? Either I'm interested in the games he talks about but there's spoilers in the videos which I don't want, or I'm not and I don't care about spoilers but I don't care about that? Wavering on whether I should watch his mostly-spoiler-free take on Outer Wilds, the first half of a two-part thing of which the second is the spoilery bit. It's the Fortnite one that I keep on coming back to.

Errant Signal's take on why graphics aren't that important is a pretty good one I think, I mean the video itself is good; Jacob Geller comes to a similar conclusion in his video about the same subject, and of the two I prefer the former, so.

Yeah so Jacob Geller, also doing video essays about video games (for someone who's so hardcore in how casual I am gaming-wise I sure watch a lot of gaming YouTube; I'm fascinated by the formation of genres and subgenres, and also really into analysis of storytelling within an interactive medium.) Of his videos, the one I keep coming back to is, this:

Speaking of spoilers, this one's got unmarked analysis of Kentucky Route Zero, and the whole thing could be seen as a discussion of that game specifically? (via analysis of other media and games, and other real-life stuff.) And it's like HEY THERE, I'm geTTING AROUND TO IT GEEZ. Warn a fella a little next time.

So This is a Great Video Essay that Blew My Mind Repeatedly

Figuring out Blogger's new interface; got most of it licked but it's reminding me I need to post on Wordpress more. (That's what I'm figuring is going to host my next webcomic, aside from the I-need-to-post-on-any-of-my-blogs-more.)

This year has been pretty bad for my executive functioning; is it the lack of blogging that's leading to lack of structure, vice versa? It's probably the job; even back when I got things done it was just very very slowly, and I accomplished things at all because I had 8-9 more hours in the day I don't have anymore.

Video coming ever, though! I should probably chop off a smaller project instead of the huge one, but I'm still down one battery charger, so no way to shoot video; at least with the one I've been working on the past six months, all the footage has been shot and I just need to finish the script and edit film clips together. (I'd be working on it now if I weren't blogging, but that just makes my getting-anything-done seem irresponsible.) I've been working on it *to the best of my ability,* I just have a naturally slow work process as I let ideas percolate.

Waking up early has gotten me this far which is pretty sweet; I read somewhere that executive function for people with executive dysfunction works best at non-daylight hours for some reason. Guess I'll keep doing this then.

even if I were to start taking meds where would I even start with them? It's something I've never done before, so, just spinning blindly in space...

So you watch that essay yet? It's 40 minutes long but probably only 20 minutes if you put it on 2x speed. Watch it again if you want. I've heard of Errant Signal I guess but never really even meant to get around to watching his stuff, even though he's one of the channels subscribed to by Dan Olsen (my favorite YouTuber) but Dan Olsen is mentioned in the video, and linked to it on Twitter, and here we are (and though of course I'd seen Manufactured Discontent and Fortnite several times and knew about the stuff they're (both) talking about here, it still just blows my mind.)

So I've been playing this video game The Outer Wilds, where you're an alien astronaut caught in a time loop as you explore your little solar system and solve mysteries, though it's far more common that you die and restart well before the sun explodes-- and how crazy would it be if there were a Battle Royale just, set in there at the same time as the exploration stuff...

Comic Things, Comnc Thiigs

Darths and Droids has finally, finally begun their Force Awakens story arc. A week ago, but I only checked in today, and hey-hey! https://darthsanddroids.net/ (Darths and Droids is a webcomic in like this, [exhales] so there's this genre that like reinvents the plots of movies and TV shows as being actually D&D-style RPG stories behind the scenes?; this particular one wasn't the first but it is arguably the most influential, and they've been going since 2007 and they're only now getting to the sequel trilogy because they were waiting to see how the whole thing would shake out and the time is finally here, woo.)

Non Sequitur introduced a new character today; that glasses kid has a younger brother with autism. Fingers are crossed??? but we'll see how this turns out??? https://www.gocomics.com/nonsequitur/2020/03/29

Third comic thing to recommend, third comic thing to recommend... there's a "I'm married to Betty Boop" thing making its rounds on Twitter or whatever? It's, something. Dare I say, something that exists.

kay bye again for now.

Dog That Speaks German!?!

(first I was reading about the history of tiki culture and there was this seminal restaurant Don the Beachcomber and trying to track down more information about that ran into Don the Dog instead. Also at Smithsonian.)

Meanwhile speaking of those guys did you hear about the 2.8 million images they released into the public domain for anybody to do whatever with? (it includes 3D models+stuff too.)

Aayyy

Wow I'm actually at a computer in the evening finally at all this year. Been meaning to blog but every time I think about it it's all, not gonna get out of bed for that.

But being into a new decade (it's an arbitrary dividing line but I love it) each thing feels like, oh first of the decade, gotta record this, ye know? First movie watched this decade, Casablanca. First Killers song I sang this decade, Believe Me Natalie, actually? First U2 song, City of Blinding Lights; first twenty one pilots song, Migraine; first Beach Boys song, Good Vibrations. First song from Cats, it's impossible to say.

I saw two rainbows so far this decade. I'm not going to let this hellworld strip my joy from me.

Shocky Powers pt I

So I had two dentist appointments, one last week one this week, and let me tell you about them? Like the one yesterday, they drained my wet wet mouth with a hoselike thing when it got too moisty in there, but with last week's they stuck cotton swabs in there right against my teeth and gums and me no likey- and then on top of that I had to fend off laughing while my teeth are being worked on because all I can think about is the tweet by the person claiming to be Zuckerberg's hairstylist claiming his ceasar haircut is from saying zucky no likey whenever it's time to get his hair done and swiveling his head in a circle exorcist-style.

Because that's a very funny image.

And it's the worst to imagine when you need to not move your mouth.

At the dentist yesterday them sticking in a couple of things, a suction thing I think and a, more pokey thing maybe, I felt this jolt in my mouth like electricity. And the suction thing is just plastic and the pokey thing is non-electric so it couldn't have been either or both, and maybe it was the tiny hole in my mouth where the numbing agent had been injected or something? And I'm like what was that and yes it turns out it doesn't make sense that that happened.

So I at least hoped that I was coming down with superpowers? Like, my mouth could spontaneously generate electrical shocks, and maybe I could train and harness that?

And I guess I would have forgotten about this if not for the strange coincidence of today...

to be continued I guess

The Pros and Cons of Catching an Opening Night Star War

So guess what bub but I've got conflicting feelings on Rise of Skywalker coming out in a week. Like, should I see it or not, and what does its existence mean, and am I even excited for it?? I have assembled a list of reasons, both contra and pro, in the hopes that it would help iron some of the issues out in my poor little heart, and, well, it's definitely helped with something...
  • Pro: heckin' Star Wars man; after TLJ, I came on record as officially excited for how Abrams continues/concludes the saga from the ending, what with TLJ both overturning the tea table and ending on a stirringly conclusive note
    • con against pro: it doesn't really matter
      • pro con con: of course it does
  • Con: Dec 20th was the deadline i'd set for myself to get my webcomic up
    • con con: i'm not getting my webcomic up by December 20
      • con con con: i mean there's still time but
      • con con pro: none of the other woodbadge goals i'd set are getting accomplished
      • con con pro: 20th is a Friday. webcomic updates on Sunday. TELL ME HOW THAT MAKES SENSE.
  • Pro: avoiding spoilers like the plague so like the sooner I get on this the better
    • pro con: they slip through anyway because of course they do
      • pro con pro: and I'd already seen the teaser trailer to begin with
    • pro pro: but other than that I'm doing a decent job
  • Con: seeing Cats instead
    • con pro: unironically excited for Cats guys
      • con pro pro: new Taylor Swift song in collaboration with sir Andrew Lloyd Webber
        • con pro pro con: Oscar bait songs are weird and often boring
          • con pro pro con con: um not always, and
          • con pro pro con con: they can grow on you
        • con pro pro pro: it's going to be called Beautiful Ghosts, and, like, I am just the biggest sucker for songs about ghosts, like legitimately there's never been a song about ghosts that's not a total bop
          • con pro pro pro pro: Ghostbusters theme, Danny Phantom theme, Grim Grinning Ghosts by Thurl Ravenscroft et al, Ghost Party by Watsky, Kicking the Ghost by Malcolm Rollick, The Ghost by Trevor Something, Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts by Wolf Parade, Ghost Pressure by Wolf Parade, Same Ghost Every Night by Wolf Parade, heck Wolf Parade sings about ghosts a lot and I just love 'em for it, Coldplay's entire Ghost Stories album...
          • con pro pro pro con: um the Casper the Friendly Ghost theme song I guess?
            • con pro pro pro con con: I mean it's alright
  • Pro: I need to update my Facebook profile pic probably, and the one I've currently got is from catching Force Awakens in theaters so like it would be the perfect photo op
    • pro pro: i've got a beard now whereas I did not before
    • pro con: I can't replicate the photo exactly because
      1. I was sneaking popcorn from the bucket of my cousin who is on his mission currently so I can't do that, and
      2. it was at the Fallon Theatre, which I can't match because they don't get first run Disney movies anymore-- which speAKING OF,
  • Con: I don't want to give Disney any of my money at all
    • con con: but they don't need it
      • con con pro: The New Star Wars Movie, it's guaranteed profit for them anyway
      • con con pro: and people more politically active than I am against this sort of thing are like whatever, let's go see a Disney movie
    • con con: besides already saw Ford V Ferrari and Ad Astra, both Fox films which makes them Disney films, and also would totally have caught Jojo Rabbit, were it playing anywhere near?
    • con con: what the hexk i guess i'll go see Frazen 2 now why not?
      • con con pro: HACK YEAHS Frazen 2 instead of Satyr Warts
  • Pro: still soliciting local business
    • pro con: they don't need it with all the others coming in
      • pro con con: but yeah they do
so umm

~~Christmas day sounds like a bombad time to catch a Star Wars movie...!~~

~~And also Cats like three more times...!~~

avoiding spoilers for five days, eh I can manage.

Fred

I realized once as a kid watching Mr Roger's Neighborhood that Mr Rogers was mortal and that one day there would be no "next time." (That's how he ended every episode, "see you next time.") And I was right. And I went to go see It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood today because I felt like I needed a good cry, but not even I suspected that I'd be bawling my eyes out before the opening logos had even finished. It was the music; that little glockenspiel or whatever, that really took me back, and, just, heck. Heck.

So yeah Andy Levy is a film twitter guy now.

So the decade is ending in... a month. That's something.

And it's like, WELL WHAT WERE THE BEST FILMS OF THE 2010S? And it's like, shoot just this year was a decade unto itself, and like, you expect me to be able to answer that? (I know I've said that about the year 2000 before, but I'm speaking relatively here and not literally. The year 2000 culturally took up a decade's worth of cultural capital; each year 2016ish to date has taken up a decade's worth of cultural adjustment.)

So anyway I'm not sure I have to compile a list of my own because someone with my apparent exact same taste has already done so; I've never felt so known. Alright that's not true, but... yep. (The most known I think I've ever felt was the Peirce Quincuncial projection analysis from this XKCD comic, speaking of xkcd.)

https://twitter.com/andylevy/status/1199494525292630018

And apparently that's... the same, Andy Levy? who was the ombudsman on Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld?, so long ago, back when Greg Gutfeld still hosted Red Eye, and also wasn't you-know-what? So uh yeah GONNA TAKE A HARD POLITICAL TURN NOW (I don't want to outright call Greg Gutfeld faschie just for being a host on Fox News, and I'd have to look into his current politics more (I remember catching the first episode of his solo show, where he made fun of Tr*mp a whole bunch, and that was the tea,) but, I've seen a clip from The Five where he says that Quid Pro Quo is, okay?? because that's kinda what 100% of human interaction is, is give-and-take??? and it was pretty contrarian and tongue-in-cheek which is on brand I guess but mostly it was like, oh Greg what happened to you. His Twitter is right there off of Levy's in the suggested similar people thing, but I can't bring myself to actually click there; Gutfeld meant so much to me as a teenager and I don't want to have to go through the pain of formalizing the knowledge that we've drifted so far apart politically.)

Also S.E. Cupp is on Twitter and she appears to be, like, genuinely liberal now? Which is... I mean she was on Fox, she was one of those, fake-libbies, an atheist who argued that religion is necessary for morality somehow, as if that were an inherently self-coherent position at all, and... Seeing her argue actual leftist positions is, strange, to me, but there you go I guess.

So yeah Andy Levy is a film twitter guy now.

I wonder what's become of Bill Schultz....

A Few Articles from Around

  • This combines a few of my favorite things in an interesting way. Like that whole Corrupted Blood thing on WoW, everything being virtual and thus being able to scrub back through the history of this and track developments as they cascade? https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019/11/18/planet-zoo-is-temporarily-a-game-about-mass-producing-knackered-warthogs/ Wish they'd gone into more detail/that there were more journalism on the topic in the first place (it's the idea of the thing more than this specific article, though the article itself is fun and breezy for what it is,) but, heck, I also wish there were more journalism on that Black Cauldron-themed restaurant they had at Disneyland back in the early 90s, so, like...
  • speaking of... http://destdisney.blogspot.com/2009/10/gurgis-munchies-and-crunchies-1990.html It was called Gurgi's Munchies and Crunchies, and this blogpost is about the most comprehensive reportage of it as exists in the world, which is sad, because if there were this, like, Power Broker-length book on nothing but that restaurant I would still totally read that book because I love the idea of that resto so much.
  • So this is happening, and it's concerning as someone who's a fan of movies, and of going to the movies, and who works at a movie theater that shows old movies sometimes, including yes Rocky Horror at least once a year. https://www.vulture.com/2019/10/disney-is-quietly-placing-classic-fox-movies-into-its-vault.html Louder for those in the back, I firmly believe that Disney ri'now have all too much power and someone needs to stay their sinful hand. But anyway.
  • Alexander Pushkin was mixed race apparently? And is a black icon? And his grea'grea'grandaddy was a spy? And it's like, sheesh, right when you think somebody can't be any cooler, they totally can be. https://www.calvertjournal.com/features/show/5334/red-africa-gannibal-race-russia-pushkin The Calvert Journal is this journal of culture and photography focusing on the New East (Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Russia, Central Asia) and it's pretty fascinating because these geo issues aren't things you see in the West much but they're our cousins so it's like, hey wow.
  • Man there's still so much neat stuff in the world.
  • MAN OH MAN.

I Dream of NBC

Good Place final season season premiere tonight at 9:00.  I caught it though we do not have TV, though I've dreamt of having satellite a couple of times the past week, specifically in regards to being able to catch The Good Place.

  1. Grandpa J comes over to live with us for a week. For some reason. He brings his satellite TV subscription, which makes me happy because I can catch The Good Place on NBC, Thursday night at 9:00 8:00 central.
  2. I explain the premise to Mom who sounds intrigued. We watch it and (someone else? and) I explain some exposition so she knows what's going on. Events occur in real life and not on TV, and have nothing to do with The Good Place. There's a treehouse, and an amnesiac cannibal woman who eats raw human livers but hallucinates they're something else.
  3. Real life now. This evening. I head over to Grandpa P's, and we watch Thursday Night football, Green Bay Packers vs Philadelphia Eagles. It's on both FOX and the NFL channel. Packers are 3 and 0, Eagles are 1-2 I think. Packers get an early lead but it's pretty close throughout. At halftime J-Lo and Shakira talk about how they're going to be doing the Superbowl halftime show, which I'd already read about on Twitter, but I don't know for some reason I'm pretty excited for this. The game continues. There's some new rule that allows teams to dispute refs' calls which is pretty interesting. One minute left in the game, Packers are 7 points behind but can still tie it up and go into overtime- they had one minute right before halftime, and made a touchdown then field goal, putting them behind by only one point. The scrimmage line or whatever it's called, the snap point, is like right there in the end zone, so it's looking very possible that the Packers might pull this off. The Packer guy catches it and is stopped by an Eagle guy, and also a second Eagle guy who runs into the first Eagle guy, ramming into his own teammate's head at an angle that practically snaps said teammate's neck. I'm not sure if he's gonna be okay, but he survived long enough to be carried off the field on a gurney. When the game resumes for those last 50 seconds, the Eagles intercept the Packers' throw, taking control of the ball, and let the timer run out for the last 20 seconds.
    1. The Good Place was pretty rad. I get to explain to Grandpa the basics of what's going on, while managing to keep things as spoiler-free as possible. Not as tricky as it sounds.

Gravity Wells

There's a scene in Ad Astra where Brad Pitt's character is crying in zero-G, and it rolls down his cheek somehow, and I genuinely thought it was symbolic somehow (you can get away with loads of arthouse stuff in an astronaut movie and still be able to market it to mainstream audiences, and boy howdy does Ad Astra exploit that fact.)

But no it just turns out that they did realize the mistake but Brad Pitt's acting was so powerful in that scene they decided to use that take. Favoring emotion over continuity is just good editing.

pots!>pot?

I'd be writing a whole thing a day if it weren't for this job (or, well, maybe; subjunctives aren't my strong suit) and choosing the best, or getting better and making the best, like with that thing, total coincidence that my mom blogs about it last night because it's what I'd been thinking about. But now I'm tired good night

EDIT:
gosh that was hard to read, looking back over it, so I think I'll translate now: the idea that it's better to make multiple pots, and learn from each one, rather than try to present a perfect pot. I'm trying to write something, but am now afraid I don't have the time to make one pot per day. That's what that all means.

So Much Eventfulness

I'm not going to blame it on luck; I'm going to blame it on how it pours when it rains and it never rains though it does pour. Because this is all truly, truly fortunate, but nothing happens in my life but when it does it all happens at once.

My first idea for scheduling yesterday's meetup I told you about was for today instead, but there was a doctor thing so yesterday worked better for him. Turns out it worked better for me too, because this morning apparently was time for getting a job, temporarily, until that other thing takes place and I go on location to work on set instead. Working at the barn, helping out with another big construction project. Well and good. Except...

Yesterday this other thing came in, contacted by old college friends of mine who want me to write a piece for the 'zine that they do. It's a great publication and a huge honor, but the deadline is the 30th, and until the news less than a day later, getting thrust into a work position, I'd been kind of going to focus on that primarily. Now it looks like I'm going to have to find time between that and the other thing. Wheee.

Exposition

I think about exposition and what constitutes it a lot. Exposition as opposed to narrative.

I'm talking about this because something's been happening I haven't brought up, though it started Sunday and there was room for it in Sunday's post it wasn't a definitive thing, and it still isn't I guess but things are happening from there, a li'l li'l fruit is being borne. I'm more open to talking about possible dead ends in my journal Doc, but I haven't talked about it there either yet, though both my latest blog post here and entry there were on Sunday.

This exposition needs to take place in both places then; guess I can, copy/paste it from my blog to the other place when the time comes.

Cramping up, super anxious. stupid bloodless laptop battery. Pants feel dirty. can't launder all pants at once because what would I wear?, also different colors and I like to wash those separately.

So on Sunday buncha people at church for Thomas's mission farewell and setting apart, and Dad talked to somebody or something, about man I don't know, so anyway in the car home he asked what he and Mom could do to support me in finding an occupation, and
DRUGS. DRUGS. DRUGS WOULD BE HELPFUL. BEING ANXIOUS BLOWS CHUNKS.
I said man I've been saying I want to filmmake for like my whole life, what's that John guy who was at dinner that one time, could you get me in touch with him, and he said he could.

And he texted him, instead of giving me the contact and letting me navigate it myself????, and occasionally he was all, here you text him at this part, but Dad's phone is gross and I don't like touching it, like the grade of plastic is one of those that I hate touching and also I don't trust Dad to keep his phone sanitized, and also the parts of the text I was supposed to do I really don't see how I could have done a better job than what he was. So on Sunday there was some negotiation there, Dad selling me up, and on Wednesday I got set up to meet this morning.

And so that happened, and the filmmaker guy's project begins preproduction next week probably. I mean, it's already been in preproduction, but, for realsies this time, like, preproduction. Things are looking pretty good for me to get in floor level on that, just as a rando worker grunt, but, this is living the dream already.

There's Some Pasta-Based Pun I Can't Think of Right Now

Haven't posted in a week because computer profile reasons, getting logged out of my account and that's okay, but I'm always signed in on my laptop, but my laptop's got dook battery and needs to be plugged in at all times and I'm always so reluctant to use it because it'd be too easy to accidentally unplug. It's Good Actually to be slightly on edge, aware, so well whatever.

Played a game of Dead of Winter. Won it.

woo

Alex was Not the Traitor this time- there was no traitor! Ummm he was the traitor two times in a row when we played a week ago; won the second game but nobody won the first game, we just all died too darn fast.

Where'd the Boys Go? (PretzelsVlog Aug 19)

Typography as smooth as silk on this thumbnail. Thumbnail feels a bit dark; might have to brighten it up to make the colors pop a bit more (as if I care about clickthrough or hits at all hah.)

B'nooks!

I went to the library today and checked out a few books but I haven't even read so much as the back cover of any of them, very mysterious. Actually now that I think about it I did glance at the back cover of NeuroTribes (which I've told you about hh he er re ee toola-roola-eh) to make sure it was the objectively better, non-Pulitzer one of those two that came out 'round the same time. Very good research! The best research. There are a lot of books to parents having to deal with children with autism, but few toward the autistic themselves, and it's all like, well what's up with that? Spooks, I'mma reckon.

I also checked out "A User's Guide to the Brain," which I hope is the same thing as "The Brain: A User's Guide" because I've heard good things about that one; a Temple Grandin book that I haven't read yet (!); and a book on living with bipolar disorder because I also like reading about other neurological issues but can't ever really find as good readable or especially workable explanations about life with bpd as I can about autism so crossing my fingers that this one will be good???.  (If I'd found Right Brained Children in a Left Brained World I would have checked that out to; I talk about it hh he er re ee toola-roola-eh, and like I've said, the neurology is probably grossly outdated, but it provides such a fascinating model for the neurological/neurodivergent spectra/spectrum that I can't help but like that book.)

Also still need to polish off the last fifthish of Oathbringer so I've got my reading work cut out for me.

Executive Functioning Metaphor

Exactly this
👉http://adhd-alien.com/

Especially the "now you know better" thing. It feels like that should be the case but there's never really a "knowing better" and it's like... darn. Am I procrastinating? Am I lazy? But those are with things you don't want to do, and it's like, I want to do this, but I can't. When I get nonverbal, I know exactly what it is that I want to say; my voice just won't work to say it, and it's like, well "I guess I should just accept my fate" accept that that thing won't be getting said. So the stove with a button, and another person, it's like, that's really what I need, but it's a catch-22, because in order for me to be a good "catch" I need to do awesome things but in order to do awesome things I need a mate...? (And it gets deeper than that, like... getting a job, is part of it, and having money, and like not having money is an issue, etc.) The alien says medications help her with motivations, give her some buttons though not all, but it's a start.

Here We Go Again with the The World is Full of Spoilers

I watched the Rise of Skywalker teaser trailer back when it came out, realizing while I was doing it that maybe this would be one that I'd want to avoid spoilers for? I've forgotten most of it by now, and Rey backflipping over a TIE fighter, like, no way that's going to be in the movie, right? A dream sequence at the very very very very beginning, sure why not.

And now there's a new trailer out, and like, man things are going to be difficult.

Totally seeing CATS instead on opening day, but who knows what after that. (don't really have plans of seeing like any upcoming Disney... um... Onward, darn it...)

and

George Miller is another guy who's just like magical in every frame but the fandom with him is fairly spot-on so I'm not gonna throw any shade this time ehhhh.

PhilosophyTube - Twitch Reading through the complete works of William Shakespeare for charity and because Shakespeare. Been nonstopish for 12 hours (intermissions exist and stuff) and Olly's heading off to bed right now (he lives in England) but Dan (who lives in Canada) is picking up the slack right now, beginning with Comedy of Errors!

Dan did a vid today as well (I had to squeeze catching it in during intermissions) which I got to watch him live-edit a couple of days ago (also on twitch) and, like, Twitch, man.

picking up on that note still

lotsa directors got aspergers Dan Harmon got aspergers (selfdiagnosed but i'm not as sneery about that anymore; not that i'm about to self diagnose m'se'f with yon borderline personality disorder or anything merely gesture vaguely and question like, maybe I have it?) Quentin Tarantino got aspergers and like, i'm not a huge fan of his work or anything (learning that there was a kill bill vol 1 and he didn't just randomly start with vol 2 really shot my expectation of him, and in general I think he's ~kinda~ overrated but that's not really a unique hot take) though he's definitely got a confidence of style I've only seen otherwise in George Lucas and a few others (we don't talk about American Graffiti and THX 1138 enough and when we talk about Star Wars we frequently miss what makes it so special)(so with that in mind maybe that's what doesn't gel about the whole Tarantino fandom, kinda missing the forest for the trees or the trees for the forest or something?) maybe some third guy got asperfers let's say lucas himself heck i can see it it would explain a lot actually
so yeah
think i may be bipolar or maybe borderline? idk

and another thing

FILM! FILLLM! what's the guy's name! what's his contact info! Dad talking to my high school video production teacher about how good I was at producting videos! It's what I'm good at! It's what I enjoy doing! there are all these steps and I just want to edit right now, not have to shoot anything; I enjoy the different steps differently and I'm finding motivation lacking what-cha-cha. The filming part of the process is a problem because of this: I enjoy performing it. I also enjoy shooting it. But I can't be in front of the camera AND behind it at the same time!!

but feeling a lot of pressure lately for jobly job, everybody's trying to push a full time job at me docked an hour a week so getting away with calling it a part time job. I'm disenfranchised with the whole system right now but still want to work because I want to be able to provide for a family! and no other reason. and it's like yes let's bring in that bicycle clown (bike clown is a metaphor for JOB ON FILM SET SOMEHOW.)

totally sober rambler

think i may need medication! for anxiety maybe!? not sure for what just sounds like a good idea in general sometimes. but other times it doesn't so like ~~? when i'm feeling good it's like I'm good so whateves, and when I'm feeling bad it's like uuuurrgghhh too depressed to even bring the topic up with anybody SIMBA. It's not like there be a magical droog that gives me executive function skills. Right now I'm in the "don't need no drugs!" camp because obviously I'm feeling energized enough to talk about it. Medication is good in general yeet.

Angry Burbs v. Ernest&Celestine

There are two primary sapient species in the Angry Birds franchise (well, technically genus in the case of pigs and class in the case of birds, but, species)-- birds and pigs. Eagles are a faction of birds as becomes important THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 IN THEATERS NOW, but phylogenetically there are two distinctly evolved taxa with distinctly different lifestyles and diets and habitats and... And the two factions, so opposed to each other, are pigs and birds.

???

Finland. Rovio is Finnish. You wouldn't expect it to explain that much, but it does.

But watching The Angry Birds Movie 2 (it's hilarious and, though not a perfect movie or anything, really difficult to dislike) the arbitrary which-taxa-are-the-sapient-ones thing reminds me of another beloved-European-property-turned-beloved-movie (seriously The Angry Birds Movie 2 has the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of any video game movie??) Ernest et Célestine, wherein Celestine is a mouse and Ernest is a bear, and there are mice and there are bears, those are the two families/genuses, and it doesn't make sense why these two taxa? until you remember that the books are Belgian and it's all, oh, oh of course.

Squishies!

This is the first time I've heard of this actually and???
https://screencrush.com/lost-star-wars-tv-show-detours/

But legit they're doing an animated Star Wars mini retelling series, as-told-by-emoji sort of thing, that stars the cast as BB-8s and, I say more power to 'em.

Artificial Winter vs Mad Times

A large thematic part of the idea was that it's sexier to be a police officer but it's more important to be a parent. An ounce of prevention versus a pound of cure, the ounce still weighs out better, and the good stuff happens preventing in the first place.

I guess I should be excited for living in such a scary time, when things have gone so bad and it it time to be a cop instead of a parent.
But that wasn't my dream. I was pointing out how much better it is to cut these things off before they start.

Now that they have started it feels like the Church could be doing more to stop it. Maybe it's ever only a parent, never a cop. The church is doing a lot of good preventing bad stuff from happening in the first place, on local levels invisibly.

Spent a lot of the evening doing fiddly bits of web design for the upcoming launch (!) of my webcomic (!!). Still not there yet but looking better? It's a sort of a turd polish, so it's nice to have a podcast on in the background.

I don't consider myself much of a multitasker but it looks like this is something I can do. Even listening to music is

ehh whatever PUBLISH

Buhhh-Buuhhh-BEEEE!

Linked to us from Shannon Hale's twitter feed: Vice article about fanfiction, Neopets, representation, authorship, and Jane Austen.

Generally unrelated though but also: the theme for Math Blaster (1999) for Ages 9-12! I used to be reticent to unironically enjoy this song but HECK IT it's been TWENTY YEARS and LIFE IS actually pretty long since twenty years is a long time but at the same time doesn't feel that way so I'm gonna go ahead and say TOO SHORT.

Premiere

Hobbs and Shaw is projected to be the biggest box office pull this weekend, but here is especially crazy since one of our own is in. It was absolutely wild. 81 people showed up.

Josh Mauga, local football hero turned pro and now actor, was in Kansas City but we FaceTimed. Tried to capture the FaceTime, but I guess it was more than just click and go. As I was getting people checked in and concession'd (conceded!) so I missed the whole thing, but maybe somebody recorded it with a camera?

POLITICIS VLOG

Oh! what a pretty thumbnail! I didn't think it was really working, even as I finished it up, but I had to hack something together so I carried on with uploading it. But now seeing it with fresh eyes, it really is quite fetching, isn't it?

Kiki

So today is apparently the thirtieth anniversary of the release of Kiki's Delivery Service? That was my favorite Ghibli film growing up. Um... that's really all I have to say; maybe leave a comment on what your favorite Studio Ghibli film was as a kid. Also, I was reading this thing about, it was a comic now that I think about it maybe I could link it,

HA FOUND IT

about how girls are allowed to have boy heroes but we discourage boys from having heroes who are women, even girls who kick butt like Matilda, and like what's with that? So with Kiki being my favorite of all the Miyazaki heroes, I guess I was a pretty lit kid.

(...though hold on. MOST of Miyazaki's movies have female main characters. Which is good, but, shoot, I thought I was being retroactively woke for a sec there...)

So all in all: Miyazaki: amazing. Takahata: amazing. (Pom Poko is my favorite Ghibli movie as an adult.) Studio Ghibli in general: amazing. Just, like, yeah. Life is beautiful, kid.

New Video

I uploaded a terrible version a week ago but it was so awful that I made that video private and spent a whole extra week on editing and pickup shoots. It's now... about as good as it's going to get. This, this is basically the ideal version of this particular video. Is it good? Is it bad? I can't say myself, but maybe other eyeballs on this would be able to tell me. The thumbnail, at least, rocks. That's one thing that's about darn perfect.

Videos I'd Like Twice if I Could, 2/2

This is technically the third part of a three-part series but is totally watchable on its own, and indeed is a bold shift thematically from the previous two videos so just FORGET THOSE GUYS I GUESS, they're pretty good but not nearly as brilliant as this one (the first talks about the Secret of Monkey Island and the eventual death of the adventure game, the culprit ultimately being the stagnation of the genre; the second is a preview of a few intriguing new game mechanics in then-upcoming games that Ian was excited by the prospect of, with the chance to break that stagnation-- basically all of which do in retrospect go on to become Big Deals so good job calling it there.)

It's not just about adventure games but uses the subject as a jumping-off point for discussion of genre itself, providing a good framework for discussion when talking about that and basically all categorization (such as, spoilers, whether a hot dog is a sandwich or not.) Amazing stuff.

New Moon or Something?

As I held up the ladder for Dad this morning, helping him pick the apricots off of Uncle Jim's apricot tree, an airplane passed overhead and I turned my eyes heavenward. And there, in the northern sky, I saw it- at first I thought maybe a balloon or something, or a plastic shopping bag caught up in the breeze very very very high, but it didn't move, just stayed there a white dot stationary in the vast blue. A planet? A star? We paused and I went to get my camera; maybe EXTREME ZOOM LENS would shed more light or definition on the situation.

My zoom lens isn't all that zoomy though so this is the best I managed to get.

As time went on it drifted across the sky, downward and to the east, getting dimmer and smaller as it went. Here are three different snapshots of it, one taken not terribly long after initial discovery, one taken fourtyish minutes later as a marker for its celestial path, and the third one the last time I managed to find it in the sky, so small and dim and behind the trees from the initial marked vantage point.

Can't be Venus because Venus is on the horizon in July in the northern hemisphere. I personally think/hope that it's a second, teensy weensy moon that just, like, appeared there today.

Videos from Yesterday I'dda Liked Twice If That Were an Option

Though I suppose I have more than one YouTube account so I can just like it on two separate accounts?? Oh dear oh dear oh dear...

(The videos didn't necessarily come our yesterday but I watched them yesterday and didn't have time to post about them then- and even now only have time to post about one today, guess it'll be a two-parter.)

BUT PART ONE ANYWAY
(I've shown you Peter Knetter before right I'm pretty sure??)

Parade Oxen

Absolutely do not get church. It always feels like I want to be joyous when it's time to be reverent and be reverent when it's time to be joyous. There's a Greek legend of when Pan was visiting some dude's house on a chilly night, and noticed how the guy blew out hot air to warm his hands but blew out cold air to cool his soup, and Pan's all well which is it? and the guy's all excuse me? and like Pan straight up murders the dude for inconsistency of mouth temperature.

and That's how I feel, like, all the time. Not the killing per se, that's just Greek gods being strange and capricious, but the ???s over my head, cos to Pan the mortal was the capricious one. It's like, wild, man.

Lukewarm Takes

You can probably never know if a hot take is going to be original or not and maybe what matters is the fact that you're the one giving it? And people only mind if the hot take is particularly uninformed maybe, or if it's on David Bowie being dead.

I just had like a grillion hot takes on the tip of my fingers but can't remember a single one. Stranger Things 3 is out? Does that count as a hot take?

An Ointment Fact

okay so there was a fact about ointment which I'd meant to bring up a week ago but I'd forgotten the precise details of till now so I didn't: but Christ is from the greek, meaning anointed, yeah? That means that the word "Christ" and the word "Cream" are cognates.

things are supposed to get better but what's getting better is me being able to tell what makes a good day good which means that I can tell now that things won't necessarily always get better but it's still largely in my hands

"I am Full of Ordinary Sounding Words" - A Robot. Literally.

So the thing about auto generated/artificial-intelligence written stories is that I kind of love them, but they terrify me artistically/existentially? All of my best ideas come from dreams which are kind of the same thing but bio organically; a thing becomes art as a human decision to frame it as such.

Spider-Men

Into the Spider-Verse is unsurpassingly brilliant for a myriad of teeny details that have to be studied carefully and specifically in order to fully appreciate the depth and scope of their perfection. Rami's Spider-Man trilogy is astounding and fresh on a macro level, full of storytelling decisions that are simultaneously unexpected and breathtakingly satisfying, even coming on near one-two decades later. And for as much flack as the ASM films get, Marc Webb is one of the greatest directors not just currently working but possibly of all time in terms of the breadth and depth of his understanding of human psyche and human relationships. Venom is, well, Venom: love and beauty and life itself.

And so like I'm not entirely sure of myself when I say that Far From Home is possibly the greatest Spider-Man movie of all time? I can't really judge a film until I've seen it at least two times; there were a few weird elements which hardly seem real looking back, and I thought the first act was kinda funky the first time I watched it, but maybe it'll work itself out, knowing the end from the beginning. And a lot of the enjoyable bits seem themselves surreal, like it was so good it couldn't have been real. Comes with the territory I guess.

It's the first MCU film without a Stan Lee cameo; this and Dark Phoenix are the sort-of capstones for their respective franchises and I can't tell if that's fitting or not. The road goes on without him now, him and Ditko. But there is a sort of after-credits logo mini-tribute, not quite as extensive or thematic as Into the Spider-Verse's. But still there.

I guess in a lot of ways it's like the looming presence of Tony Stark. You can feel it in everything. Or something.
