What a Crazy, Crazy Bunch

Yes, that title is itself a crossover, of John Munch (the king of crossovers) and Robert Munsch (the king of... Murmel murmel murmel.) How... meta, I guess.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the television debut of John Munch, the cynical Baltimore Police Department detective from Homicide: Life on the Streets who who would on to detective for the New York Police Department in Law & Order: SVU. Yep, it's been twenty years to the day since the premier of Homicide: Life on the Streets, which debuted immediately following Superbowl XXVII (the one with the halftime show by Michael Jackson, which singlehandedly set the new standard in halftime shows after it became one of the most watched events in television history. (Maybe the character would not have become as popular as he did if not for that. In fact, NBC was cashing in on that, so that as impressive as the ratings were, they were still seen as a disappointment after the media blitz to cash in on Berry Levinson, and I guess all this research is kind of derailing me from my original point. (See, what did I tell you? Never do research. (Alright, do research, but do it beforehand, so that it doesn't derail you with so much information to pack in. (But anyway.)))))

Munch, as portrayed by Richard Beltzer, went on to connect the universes of Law & Order, The Wire, The X-Files, and some less serious stuff, like Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Arrested Development, and 30 Rock. No, I'm not sure how that works either. It's clearly just Richard Beltzer as himself in those ones, only, Richard Beltzer as himself as John Munch. That's not confusing. Anyway, happy birthday, John Munch!
